National Library of Wales, Windows 11 kiosk build and deployment

Casestudy

Client Overview

The National Library of Wales is a Welsh Government sponsored body and the legal deposit library of Wales. Whilst formed in the 19th century, the National Library of Wales was originally discussed in the 18th century before budgeting was agreed and the funding supplied by the Welsh Government.

With sites located across Wales the organisation provides free access to the residents of Wales for either in-person or digital access to the resources via their website for reading and viewing of the content.

Problem Statement

National Library of Wales provide access to areas of their public platforms via Microsoft Windows 11 Kiosk devices within their sites. The terminals must provide secure and restricted access to specific areas of the network without the opportunity for individuals to access other sensitive areas of the National Library for Wales IT estate, but also offer the full functionality of navigating the National Library of Wales’ platform.

Our Approach

Goaco’s Digital Transformation and Cyber consultants designed a device build that could be secured and implemented on National Library for Wales dedicated Windows 11 machines. The solution was secured to enable restricted access to internal services within the organisation, without risking or exposing other elements of the library’s data, network or resources.

Goaco’s Digital Transformation and Cyber Security teams worked together to design, implement and automate a secure solution that can be applied seamlessly on any Kiosk device for every site that National Library of Wales needs. Goaco’s security team performed a security assessment following the CREST Methodology to ensure that all the requirements from National Library of Wales have been delivered. In addition, Goaco provided tailored support to the National Library of Wales’ technical team to successfully and securely onboard the new solution into their infrastructure.

Our Solution

Goaco performed a requirements gathering session, captured during a discovery call with the National Library of Wales, prior to designing a comprehensive Statement of Work to perfectly fit the library’s requirements, while also strictly adhering to Goaco’s ISO: IEC 27001:2022 ISMS controls.

Our Cyber Security team designed an automated solution that is imaged and managed remotely on any new device with a pre-defined build so that the National Library of Wales technical team can apply it to any of their sites with ease.

The solution has been designed using Microsoft Autopilot and custom scripting that Goaco’s engineers developed and tested, to ensure all the initial requirements are fulfilled, and to maintain compatibility with the National Library of Wales’ infrastructure.

Before the solution handover, Goaco performed a final security assessment, delivered by Goaco’s CREST Penetration Testing team, to ensure the highest level of delivery and that no vulnerabilities were introduced into the National Library of Wales’ infrastructure post-deployment.

After releasing the product, Goaco assisted the National Library of Wales through a series of technical calls to further explain the functionality, assist with the system implementation, and ensure that the handover was completed seamlessly.

The Result

The first Windows 11 kiosk went live at the National Library of Wales Aberystwyth branch before becoming available for network-wide deployment after the successful pilot implementation. Visitors can now securely access digital services without accessing any sensitive parts of the library’s systems. It’s simple to use, easy to navigate and built with the public in mind. We built the kiosk solution to scale beyond its initial launch. The library’s backend team can use Microsoft Autopilot to manage and install kiosks across all sites remotely without extra effort.

The kiosks are now active and the library will now focus on sustaining their optimal performance to provide safe accessible digital services.

Here’s how we’ll continue to support the National Library of Wales

1) Help manage and improve the kiosk system using Autopilot and other tools

2) Be on hand for any updates, changes or future enhancements

3) Regular security tests and checks will be performed to maintain complete protection

4) Provide recommendations to enhance accessibility and maintain service quality based on user requirements

We feel honoured to have collaborated with the National Library of Wales on this project, which addresses a genuine problem through secure, sustainable, and future-proof solutions.
